In feite werd het grootste deel van de kustlijn van Australi\u00eb voor het eerst in kaart gebracht door Nederlandse zeelieden. In de periode na de Tweede Wereldoorlog moedigde de Nederlandse overheid immigratie actief aan om de woningnood in het land te helpen verminderen. Op hun beurt emigreerden honderdduizenden Nederlanders en bijna een derde koos ervoor om zich in Australi\u00eb te vestigen. Ook kwamen er enkele Nederlanders via Indonesi\u00eb (een voormalige kolonie van Nederland) naar Australi\u00eb. Het aantal Nederlanders dat naar Australi\u00eb emigreerde nam in de jaren zestig af naarmate de economische situatie in Nederland verbeterde. Sommige Nederlanders kozen ervoor om terug te keren naar Nederland.<\/p>\n<p>Een onderscheidend aspect van de Nederlandse emigratie naar Australi\u00eb was hun bewustzijn van &#8216;aanpassen&#8217;. In het openbaar leken de meeste Nederlanders hun sociale kenmerken die door Australi\u00ebrs als &#8216;etnisch&#8217; konden worden gedefinieerd, minder te benadrukken. Dit werd een kenmerk van de Nederlandse identiteit in Australi\u00eb. In de afgelopen 60 jaar heeft de Nederlandse gemeenschap in Australi\u00eb een grote invloed gehad op de bouw- en constructiesector. De Nederlandse cultuur en het gemeenschapsleven worden in stand gehouden door organisaties en evenementen. Zo organiseert Springvale (een buitenwijk van Melbourne, Victoria) jaarlijks het grootste Nederlandse festival op het zuidelijk halfrond, bekend als het &#8216;Holland Festival&#8217;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nederlandse zeelieden behoorden tot de eerste Europeanen die Australi\u00eb bereikten.
